This week, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recognized River Trails School District 26 as a partner in their Better Climate Challenge. The challenge asks partners to commit to reducing portfolio-wide greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50% within 10 years and to work with the DOE to share successful solutions and decarbonization strategies.
River Trails is one of only two school districts, among more than 90 organizations across the country, that is participating in the challenge and driving real-world action toward a low-carbon future. The DOE will support efforts with technical assistance, peer-to-peer learning opportunities, and a platform to help demonstrate the district’s commitment to being part of the solution to climate change.
“Better Climate Challenge partners like River Trails District 26 are committing to decarbonize across their portfolio of buildings and share effective strategies to transition our economy to clean energy,” said U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm. “Their leadership and innovation are crucial in our collective fight against climate change.”
Participation in this challenge is a part of the district’s ongoing sustainability efforts which includes the recent renovation of Prairie Trails School, Mount Prospect’s first net-zero energy facility.
